My work is about transformation. The breasts are hollow and the female forms are completed by shadow. This intentionally ambiguous juxtaposition stirs the mind to the question: "How can we be nourished from emptiness?" That question is the springboard. In psychological parlance, the shadow is made up of undesirable and long repressed impulses. Yet the shadow also contains undeveloped impulses that may represent the best part of the personality. "Nourished by Shadow" is the wish to be nourished by the best part of you. The part that you may have been running away from your entire life. The icons are glazed with black ash to further accentuate this shadow component. Life, and intuition, comes out of shadow and darkness. This quiet internal place, a room with no distractions, rationalizations, complexes or "mind chatter" is where we go to find our connection to the divine. The presence of the ceramic icons calls us to define the true Self. Fill your heart with meaningful experiences. Life is not an imitation of anything. The archetypes, stories and parables shared from generation to generation are the ingredients to live a rich and authentic life. Our culture’s emphasis on artificial, sensation-oriented consumption distracts us from ever discovering our true nature and spiritual potential.
