This image was inspired by the concept of parthenogenesis. The front, however, became an icon unto itself. As I created the icon, the image of the goddess in her pagan (“of the earth”) manifestation appeared. Her face is actually a mirror. Like all good mothers, she reflects back who and what you are, not she wants you to be.
The pagan mother archetype is traditionally associated with a moon symbol. She embodies reflected light, or consciousness. She is not illumination or a source of energy. She is, more importantly, a potently charged image that connects the viewer to wonder, honor and sacredness. This image is an inspiration that holds mystery and promise and life. Her breasts are swollen and presented as cups; her belly carries a spiral wave, signifying concentrated energy and harkens to the wheel/circularity of life. These are universal symbols celebrating the universality of life. The image honors the miracle of carrying life, in all its forms.
